You have probably noticed the popularity of sharing and other social bookmarking buttons on many web sites. So why not add them to your web site? There are several ways you could add these to Dolphin 7.
If you really wanted this feature for all your pages you could just add them to the Dolphin 7 header or footer. I don't think they look as nice in the header or footer, but that is an option. Your web site probably don't need sharing and bookmarking on every single page. Someone is pretty unlikely to use this feature to share your join, about us, faq, contact, and similar pages.
I prefer to add the sharing and social bookmarking feature to pages I feel are worthy, important, and useful. In this tutorial I will be adding the Share This social bookmarking and sharing ability to my tutorial pages. My tutorials are really the same as Dolphin 7 articles.
The first thing I want to do is determine which service I would like to use. There are several out there.
The more popular ones are:
Personally I like sharethis.com's buttons, features, and tracking ability the best. There are also a few add blockers that I have come across that have a tendency to block addthis.com buttons.
They are free, and account holders have more control and features they can set within their account area.
Once you have decided which service you like, pick your preferred style and layout, then just generate the necessary code.
Copy the code they provide you with to notepad, wordpad, or your favorite text editor.
Sharethis.com code looks something like this:
<span class="st_twitter_large" displayText="Tweet"></span><span class="st_facebook_large" displayText="Facebook"></span><span class="st_ybuzz_large" displayText="Yahoo! Buzz"></span><span class="st_gbuzz_large" displayText="Google Buzz"></span><span class="st_email_large" displayText="Email"></span><span class="st_sharethis_large" displayText="ShareThis"></span>
From sharethis.com account page. Notice I have picked the bigger share buttons. Below that are the codes that I will be adding to a Dolphin 7 HTML Block.
Now that you have the necessary code login to your Dolphin 7 Administration panel area.
I am just going to place the code in an html block on the Single Article page.
So navigate to:
In the drop down menu in the center of the screen select:
This will now be how the layout of your Article page looks.
Click on the HTML Block and drag it up to the Active Blocks area and release it where you want it to go. I think this will look nice right above the Actions.
Now I want to give the HTML Block a related name and paste the code I got from sharethis.com above.
To do this simply click on the center of the HTML Block and a little window will open like so:
Change the HTML Block text to what you want the block to actually say and be titled (Caption Lang Key).
-I will change mine to Share This in this example.
Then in the Code Area (HTML-content) simply paste in the code you got from sharethis.com or whatever service you decided to go with.
Simply click the Save button to apply the changes.
So it looks something like the following:
Now navigate to one of your Dolphin 7 Articles to verify.
If all is well you should see the share this block in the top right corner of an article page, with the button style you originally picked.
You might test it out a little. Send yourself an article by email or click on one of the share buttons to make sure it's working properly.
Since I have a Delicious account for example and I am logged into Delicious if I click on the icon or button it should automatically take me to the site with most of the fields already filled out. So I know it is working like it is intended.
Pretty simple, and looks great too!
It is impossible to say if anyone will use sharing or bookmarking on your Dolphin 7 site that much or at all. It depends on the visitor or member. How useful or interesting the page and content might be. Sharethis does provide stats in your member account area though.
You really never know. Some people like to share things with the entire world. Others just aren't that tuned into sharing and bookmarking.
But, for something free and easy to add to Dolphin 7 it might be worth adding to your web site.
