Tutorial

This Tutorial explains and covers the Dolphin 7.1 Moderation settings. It is intended to provide you with a better understanding of how the different settings and options work. The following information will help you get a better understanding of how they work, and help you decide how you want to configure them.

Ultimately it will be up to you to figure out what works best for you and your website.

You can find and configure these in Dolphin 7.1 here:
Settings
-Advanced Settings
--Moderation

Auto-activate profiles after joining
Preserve profile status after profile info editing
Auto-confirm profile without confirmation email
Enable notification about new members
Enable albums auto-approval

Dolphin 7.1 Moderation Settings

Auto-activate profiles after joining
This one is pretty self-explanatory. It this is checked then new members will automatically be approved and activated without you needing to do anything.

If it is unchecked, then you need to manually approve the new member.

However, if you also uncheck the Auto-confirm profile without confirmation email they will still need to confirm their email address.

Preserve profile status after profile info editing
If you check this one, then the member can change their profile information as much as they want.

If you uncheck this one, then you will have to approve it again after they make changes to their profile.

Auto-confirm profile without confirmation email
If you check this one, then new members do not need to confirm their email address.

If you uncheck this one, then new members are sent a confirmation email. They will need to click a link in the email to confirm their email address.

Enable notification about new members
If you check this one you (the site administrator) will receive an email notification when a new member joins your site.

If you uncheck this one, then you will not receive any email notifications when someone joins.

Enable albums auto-approval
If you check this one if a member creates a new album you do not need to approve it first.

If you uncheck this, then whenever a member creates a new album you (the administrator) will need to manually approve it.

Example with light moderation:

Dolphin 7.1 Light Moderation

These are checked:
Auto-activate profiles after joining
Preserve profile status after profile info editing
Enable notification about new members
Enable albums auto-approval

Result:
New members/profiles are automatically activated only after they click a link in the email to confirm their email address. Once they do that they can change and update their profile without any additional moderation or approval by the site administrator. They can also create new albums without approval. You will receive a notification about the new member in your email.

Basically they can do whatever is allowed for their membership (usually standard or promotional) once they confirm their email address.

Example with strict moderation:

Dolphin 7.1 Strict Moderation

These are checked:
Enable notification about new members

Result:
When a new member joins your site they will need to click a link in the email to confirm their email address. Once they do that you will still need to manually approve them.

If they change or update their profile you will also need to manually approve it again.

You will also need to manually approve any albums they happen to create before anyone else can see them.

You will receive a notification about the new member in your email.

Basically with this configuration the new member will have to confirm their email. Once they do that you will still need to manually approve them. You will also need to re-approve their profile if they change it, and if they create albums you will need to approve it.

Additional:
Overall the Dolphin 7.1 moderation settings are partially a matter of preference, and partially figuring out what works best for you.

I would consider unchecking Auto-confirm profile without confirmation email at the very least. Otherwise, you get people and bots joining that go right to work posting spam.

You can also use these moderation settings in conjunction with membership levels, the Page Access Control Module, and other module settings you have installed to limit what members can do.
