Years ago I used to read a lot of product and service reviews. I still read some every now and then, but rarely do they have any influence on whether or not I will buy or subscribe to something anymore.
The reason for that is there are so many bogus fake reviews out there these days. You have all kinds of website’s writing reviews about how great a specific product or service is along with a (insert affiliate link). This doesn’t mean that it is necessarily garbage, but there are tons of these that exist solely to make the website money. Shoot in many cases the site owner has never used the product or service themselves to even know if its decent or not.
I don’t blame them for trying to make some money, but I am not going to be sold on an article/review that was written in the form of a sales pitch with the same affiliate link conveniently added 10 or more times. Not to mention many are so poorly written I can barely understand what they are getting at.
Then, we have businesses paying people to write positive reviews about their company, products, and services. I guess that’s one way to improve your company image.
Of course there are businesses more than happy to pay people to write negative reviews about a competitor as well. To me that’s a little low, but it definitely happens.
From what I understand and have been told there are specific ratings and review sites that are owned and maintained by certain companies for positive reviews about their business. Now that’s one heck of a way to boost your company image hey!
What about honest negative reviews? Every now and then the TV news station in my area airs a story about someone who posted a low rating or score about a local company. The company ends up suing for defamation and claims that they lost money over the single comment or review. This may or may not be true, but what do they expect, all positive happy customers and reviews? Unless you have only 10 customers I find it difficult to believe that you wouldn’t have at least some that were unhappy on occasion. I can’t imagine 10,000+ plus customers doing the happy dance all the time.
Just because it was posted online somewhere doesn’t mean that it is legit. It very well could be, but it could also be a load of crap. It’s kind of a bummer when some of the iffy reviews out rank a more legit and probably honest review in Google search, but heck that’s just the way it is I guess.
Every review isn’t a complete waste of time, but it has become much more difficult to weed out and eliminate the bull then it was years ago. Occasionally I do find a thread or article that is very detailed and well written along with good user and visitor feedback. Unfortunately, at least for me, I don’t come across them very often.
