I received an email from Google Adsense recently saying that they were going to be putting the +1 button in Adsense advertisements this month (October 2011). Supposedly they say it will be an additional signal to help determine an ad’s relevance and they will continue to show the ads that will generate the most revenue.
I briefly read over Google’s blog post:
+1: Now making Display ads more relevant
It goes on to say starting in October the +1 button will begin appearing. People will be able to endorse specific ads and make them more likely to appear to their social connections. They also go on suggesting that readers will be more likely to notice ads on your website, which can lead to more clicks and better returns. I don’t know about this one yet. It seems like they are just looking for a way to slap more ads on everyone.
My first thought is Google is really pushing this +1 button anywhere and everywhere they can. I am a little unsure about +1 in ads. It might help draw attention to the ad, but at the same time I don’t know how you can +1 the thing when you haven’t actually visited or viewed the website. Maybe there will be people that +1 an advertisement because the banner looks nice and pretty.
The email I received says: You can opt out of the +1 button in Google Adsense.
If you prefer not to show the +1 buttons on display ads on your pages, you can opt out in your account. For more information please visit the Inside AdSense blog.
This seems to imply that the +1 button will appear in ads by default. If you do not want them to, then it seems to imply you need to manually opt out.
You can read more about opting out here:
About +1 features and social annotations
I don’t know if you can opt out until Google rolls it out or if you need to be using the new adsense interface panel to do so because I do not have the option of opting out in the old adsense interface version. I haven’t checked the new interface to see if it is possible to opt out there yet or not.
We will likely hear and see more about the Google +1 button in Adsense ads as we head into October and they begin rolling out.
I will probably allow the +1 button in ads for the time being to see what happens. I don’t expect any major revenue increase from it, but you never know I guess.
It does make me wonder where else Google will find to slap their +1 button on or into.
If you start seeing the +1 button in ads this could be why. Who knows how many websites will allow it compared to those that opt out.
