Does anyone remember Ask Jeeves? Which later became just Ask.com?
I used to think Ask Jeeves was a pretty decent marketing idea. Those darn commercials on TV caught my attention. They actually have a strong resemblance to what we see with the Dex commercials on TV. The ones where someone is always asking Dex for directions, where to find something, etc.
Well now Ask.com appears to be on its way out or pulling the plug in the near future. At least for their search results anyway. It sounds like the will continue with their Question and Answer based service for now anyway.
Basically they just say they can't compete with the likes of Google, and it seems they are throwing in the towel.
Ask.com was originally acquired for $1.85 billion. Which is a lot of money to most of us. However, I did recently read an article about how Google was trying to buy a building in New York for $2 billion alone.
Anyway I did like the Ask Jeeves concept and marketing. I just didn't care for Ask Jeeves or Ask.com search engine and results.
I do hate to see more competition in terms of search engines calling it quits. I have seen so many come and go over the years it's kind of sad. I guess for now the only ones that can remotely compete with Google is Bing, and the Chinese based Baidu search engine.
