The short answer is Yes probably. We have all seen those comment forms and what do they ask for? Name, web site / url, email address, and your actual comment.
We hope that the blog owner doesn’t see our email address and decide to send us 100 new messages stuffed with their affiliate links about how they make $4000+ per week sitting in front of their computer in their pajamas doing almost nothing. If it were that simple we would all be raking in the money.
I don’t expect or assume that just because I leave a comment on a site or blog that I will get hammered with messages like these, but yes it can happen. Any time that you fork over your email address there is always the possibility that this can happen.
You really never know, although there are certain sites that I tend to avoid commenting on that I just have a feeling that if I do so I know I am going to regret it.
I do not follow the get rich quick niche that much. Is it possible to get rich quick? Anything is possible right? Just like winning the lottery is possible, or that a bag full of money will fall out of the sky and land right in front of me! Sure I would like to retire a millionaire tomorrow, and live happily ever after on my own private island in the tropics, but that’s not going to happen.
Anyway, back on topic…Maybe it’s just coincidence, but I do get a sudden burst of spam in my inbox after leaving comments on occasion. Not always, but it does happen and it makes me wonder.
It’s just one of those things you come to expect I guess. If you want to comment on a story, or build backlinks there isn’t too much you can do about it.
Sometimes I wish that they would come up with a better system where we wouldn’t have to input an email address. I don’t know if it’s possible or what they could use instead, but it wouldn’t hurt my feelings any if there was an alternative.
Some people use a fake or non-existent email address, but by doing so you increase your chances of having your comment deleted. I don’t think it is a wise idea to enter a string of random characters @ gmail .com and expect your comment to be approved at most sites.
Others say you should create or use an email address just for blog commenting and other places where you don’t want to give out your personal or good email address. This is a possibility, but it does create more maintenance and work. You would need to remember another login and do some house cleaning eventually right? I can’t even keep track of the ones I have right now, and I don’t want to even think about creating another one. I remember reading an article recently where this person said they had something like 20+ different email addresses. I don’t know maybe 20 is the magic number in this day and digital age, but if you ask me that is way too much to manage and keep track of. All I can think of is that would be 20 times more spam and other junk to sift through on a regular basis.
I am just having one of those I hate spam moments!
