Google ResultsI know there was the new Hummingbird update officially announced recently followed by a new Penguin 2.1 update. Not to mention all the Panda/Penguin updates and regular algorithm changes that Google seems to be pushing out at record pace lately.

Are all these updates really helping? And, more importantly are they actually improving search results? That may depend on who you ask, or what someone happens to be searching for to some extent. Also, what your definition of high quality is because this seems to vary from one person to the next.

I haven’t been too impressed with what I have been seeing lately, but that is my opinion and here is one example of many similar cases out there.

Date of Google search: October 8th, 2013
Seach phrase: how to install boonex dolphin
Other: Penguin 2.1 rolled out on October 4th, 2013 ish

Search Results Returned:
1. Boonex.com
2. Boonex.com
3. Boonex.com
4. Boonex.com
5. YouTube.com
6. YouTube.com
7. YouTube.com
8. YouTube.com
9. JamesTadeo.com
10. BoonexNerd.net

Top 10 Results

Obviously this can vary depending on where in the world you live, and to what datacenter you happen to be connecting to. Also, whether or not you are logged into a Google account or service.

What it amounts to is the top 10 Google results only return 4 different sites. Boonex.com, YouTube.com, JamesTadeo.com, and BoonexNerd.net. Ironically I know James Tadeo and I know that both JamesTadeo.com and BoonexNerd.net are his. So although this particular result only includes 4 different sites, it is more like 2 different companies, and 1 individual.

Is this what we can expect from Google’s attempt to reduce spam with all there Penguin, Panda, Hummingbird, and other algorithm updates? Seriously there are no other sites that deserve to be mixed in there in the top 10? Now I am not implying that I should be because actually one of the YouTube videos are mine, but I honestly don’t think this is a good top 10 results. There should be more variety in the bunch. Boonex should rank up there in the top one or two slots, but four of them? I don’t know about that so much, and to be followed by 4 YouTube right in a row is almost ridiculous.

This isn’t just an isolated case either. I see similar results for a number of different terms lately. Google claims they are making things more relevant, reducing spam, and overall quality is improving. I don’t know what they are searching for, but it must be something different from what I search for.

You can definitely find more variety in Bing, at least at this time along with decent quality results.

I know there are ups and downs in Google on a regular basis. The same thing can be said about their new updates and algorithm changes. Some sites end up with an increase in rankings and overall traffic while others decrease and lose traffic.

Based on what I have seen the past couple of months I am not impressed with what they have been doing. I am more disappointed in seeing such a limited amount of sites in the top 10 than I am with the overall quality of the ones I do see. These are all decent enough sites, but 4 results from not only one domain, but two domains per page is just too much in my opinion. I definitely think they need a significant change to the way they are doing things.

Hopefully they get their **** together or find a new lead person for their webspam team that actually knows what they are doing because they are losing credibility and making things worse in my opinion.
